President nominates RanjanGogoi to Rajya Sabha
Former CJI RanjanGogoi was nominated by
President Ram NathKovind to Rajya Sabha on 16th March 2020.
RanjanGogoi is the third supreme court judge who will serve in the Rajya Sabha.
The vacancy was occurred after K.T.STulsi got retired at the end of the
February 2020. The President was pleased to nominate the name of RanjanGogoi
for filling the vacancy in Rajya Sabha.
Ranjan Gogoi was born on 18th
November 1954 in Tai-Ahom family at K.C Gogoi Path in Dibrugarh. Gogoi done his
schooling from Don Bosco School in Dibrugarh and then he graduated fromSt. Stephen
College, Delhi.He received a degree of Law from Delhi University. In 1978,Gogoi
enrolled at the bar and he started practicing atGuwahati High Court and there
he was made permanent judge on 28 February 2001. He thengot transferredto
Punjab and Haryana High court on 9th September 2010. On 12th
February 2011, hebecamethe Chief Justiceof the Punjab and Haryana High Court.He
was appointedas a Judge of Supreme Court in 2012.
He served as 46thChief Justice
of India for 13 months between 2018- 2019. He was mainly known for his views on
Ayodhya case. On 9th November 2019, he and four other judges (Sharad
Arvind Bobde, Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and S. Abdul Nazeer) passed
a judgement regardingAyodhya Ram Janambhoomi and Babri Masjid title
dispute.After the daily hearings and listening different-different point
ofviews,the five judges unanimously gave decision in the favour of Ayodhya Ram
Janambhoomi , based on ASI (Archaeological Survey of India)findings.
RanjanGogoi also headed the matters that had held that the office of CJI will
come under the purview of the Right to Information Act, allowing the entry of
women into Sabarimala Temple and the Rafale fighter jet deal. A clean chitwas given to the Rafale fighter
jet deal but on the other hand the larger question on the religious freedom has
been referred to a nine judge bench.
